Digital Transformation for Small Financial Institutions
Help small financial institutions assess digital readiness, build investment cases, select technology and vendors, launch compliant digital onboarding, integrate payment channels and manage transformation successfully.
What this workshop addresses
Digital is no longer optional for small financial institutions — members and customers now expect to open accounts from their phones, transact without visiting a branch, and interact with services as seamlessly as they do with the big banks and fintechs. Yet for credit unions, microfinance institutions and community lenders, digital transformation carries real risk: choosing the wrong core banking system, failing integration and migration, regulatory and cybersecurity exposure, and initiatives that stall at the pilot stage. Digital Transformation for Small Financial Institutions is a practical, high-impact workshop from Blakes' Training Institute that guides leaders through the journey — from assessing digital readiness and building a business case, to selecting vendors, planning core system upgrades, launching compliant digital onboarding with e-KYC, and integrating mobile money and payment platforms. Through vendor evaluation exercises, cost-benefit analyses and transformation roadmaps built on your own institution's context, participants leave with a realistic, sequenced plan — not a wish list.
Recommended participants
- CEOs, general managers and executive teams of credit unions, MFIs, SACCOs and community banks; board and digital/technology committee members; operations and IT managers; risk and compliance officers; branch and channel managers; and project leads and change champions responsible for digital implementation.
Key objectives
- By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Assess digital readiness — evaluate people, processes, data, infrastructure and culture against a structured maturity model and identify priority gaps.
- Build the business case — quantify costs, benefits and risks; sequence initiatives; and present an investment case that supports board and regulator confidence.
- Select systems and vendors wisely — define requirements, score core banking and onboarding vendors, negotiate contracts and reduce lock-in and implementation risk.
- Launch compliant digital onboarding — design e-KYC journeys that satisfy identification, verification and AML/CFT obligations while keeping the customer experience efficient.
- Integrate mobile money and payments — understand connectivity, reconciliation, fee structures, agent networks and risk controls behind digital wallet and mobile-money integration.
- Manage the change — plan data migration, cybersecurity and resilience, staff retraining, member adoption and post-launch monitoring so transformation is sustained.

How best to use this training
Bring the CEO/GM, board technology representatives, operations/IT and risk leads together so the transformation roadmap is jointly owned. Schedule the workshop before major investment decisions such as a core banking upgrade, digital onboarding platform or mobile money partnership. Apply the readiness assessment and roadmap template to the institution during the session, then review progress quarterly. Use the risk, cybersecurity and e-KYC modules to update the IT risk register, data-protection controls and AML/CFT procedures for digital channels within 60 days. Retain assessments, roadmaps and vendor evaluations as evidence of prudent planning, and refresh the programme as technologies, vendors and regulatory expectations change.
